I just did a reel about the Malle hiring, because I initially couldn’t believe she was in the lead vs seasoned heavy hitters like Tonne Goodman. But I recognize she’s been invaluable to Anna for more than a decade with creative ideas like Dogue, resurrecting Vogue weddings and more (significant lift to site traffic). The issue is exactly as Lauren Gallo notes — the flailing publication appears to be running itself like a business not a fashion brand. They’ve lost virtually all credibility as creative leaders in fashion, and could have had the best of both worlds if they sought out someone super inventive and style-centric from international editions.
totally agree. they have the budget & the talent to do both. i hope one day they can turn things around, develop any POV at all (please!!) & create some better covers… LOL
Great article. American Vogue covers have been underwhelming for the past decade. Multiple people online have been praising Vogue China, Vogue Taiwan, and Vogue Philippines for their creative and artistic magazine covers and spreads. I saw the photos from the September issue of Vogue China. The cover was great. If you have not seen the photos, you should look at them. They feature China's top models in the issue, showcasing a day in the life of a top model creatively. I agree that the photos of Chloe when announcing that she was the new head of American Vogue could have been styled better. The outfits look like something you would wear grocery shopping at your local Target or Kroger, not that I am the new head of one of the most prominent fashion magazines in America.
To answer your question, I think that fashion magazine editors should have an eye for style and (although I loathe this phrase) a passion for fashion. Coming from a merchant perspective, the buyers that were numbers > fashion consistently had a higher markdown rate/lower ST%/lower performing assortments under their belts than buyers that were stylish and truly understood fashion. That being said, I'm looking forward to what Chloe Malle will do and like her ideas as you've outlined :)
I had the same thought about Chloe Malle, but I also sort of find it to be a breath of fresh air…like, you don’t HAVE to be a specific kind of woman to have success, and whether people know it or not, it opens up career doors for several women not only in fashion, but in many other fields. So, I think it’s great!
hahaha b2b brand marketing, actually ✨🤪 thank you so so much. that means a lot, genuinely:’) ill post pics when I finally get my hands on the beloved meatball plates. they can take all my $$$
Boring style is totally acceptable if it looks good. She could just rock all black, or pick a heritage brand like Yohji or Comme or Celine and wear that exclusively, or do the Steve Jobs thing and wear turtlenecks every day! I can understand a business-minded girlie preferring to spend her time on spreadsheets over personal styling, but it is bad for Vogue’s business to look both boring and that not good.
100% agree. if she had one uniform, that would be awesome. so many amazing fashion designers do this as well. that’s definitely what id recommend. it’s easy, the resources are there & she wouldnt have to think about it :’) hahah
You had me at fridge cig. I feel like knowing how to do your job well is extremely important; dressing the part is the bonus and for that reason I do feel like she should be at least stylish. Vogue is huge, she does give off frumpy. I guess the good thing is she can always improve her style but someone may not always be the right fit for the job
So glad ✨🫶🏻 & I 100% agree. She has the resources + access to dress well. I’d almost go as far as to say, it could even be taken as an insult to the community that she doesn’t put effort into her attire for public appearances. and I get it.
I'm not in the fashion business and don't read Vogue, but as someone who is always complimented on their personal style, looking at these photos of Chloe (who I was unaware of) it's so obvious to me that she could easily have better style. Most people with bad/not great style just need a stylish person to help them find outfits that bring out their best features (where's Carson Kressley when you need him?). I don't think an editor of a fashion magazine needs to be the MOST fashionable person in the room, but they should have an idea of what looks good and know how to look stylish (especially when they can afford to buy the best/most fashionable clothes!). More importantly, the editor of a fashion magazine/brand should have a strong POV that is emblematic of their personal style (like Jenna Lyons or Rachel Zoe). It just looks like Chloe has zero personal style, or maybe her style is simply boring, which is not what people associate when they think of Vogue. People seem more disappointed with the lack of POV in her style than her experience. I'm sure she's a great editor though.
very true. i totally agree. she is very much focused on her work, rather than her appearance, which some people admire. this new role is going to put her in the spotlight way more, so I wonder if she’ll get a stylist !!?
I’ve been loving the shade Law has been throwing at the PR contestants! It’s so bitchy and fresh, after years of being nice(er). I loathe the twins, but I can’t see a clear winner.

Cannot remember what your full time gig is but if isn't fashion/interiors, I'm at a loss. You have such a fun, smart POV.
I love your finds! Especially those chunky meatball plates!!!!

Well, I had thought she did, but I have been proved wrong.

100% agree with your closing stance on Chloe! And just me, or does she serve a little young Princess Margaret? Love that about her.
I can totally see that !
I loved this piece. What a wonderful talent! Thank you Emilee.
